I’m starting a blog. I want to use it to create a professional identity, but I also want to say something interesting. I don’t know yet who my audience is: friends, family, potential employers. My audience can’t be everyone I know, nor can it be everyone I don’t know. I do have a Facebook profile now. If you’re interested, take a look. It’s bare. I’m in the process of compiling friends: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=799828897. That sure is a cute picture of Jesse.

Why does anyone want RSS (Real Simple Syndication)?
It’s quite simple – rather than goto multiple sites to look at blogs, vlog and
many news sources simply look at your RSS feeds and only updated items would
be shown. Neat huh? However I don’t use RSS as too much junk comes down. I
personally prefer going to the sites Im interested in.

Isn’t there a way for comments to appear below the original post? It’s kind of annoying to have to click on “comments” to see comments.
I plan to start using del.icio.us. That would have been the best way to share the Oregon coast links. I’m not sure how that works as a complement to RSS feeds.

Kristin, I’m changing my opinion on rss feeds after really trying it. I now have both this blog and mine (mhblog.hoodes.com) as rss feeds on my bookmarks toolbar. I just mouse over to see any new entries. I also use a aggregator (sp?) which takes a lot of rss feeds and presents them to me. (Right now there are 281 entries for me to peruse.)

So far I love what you’re doing here. I work at a university press also and recently started a blog (www.willworkforbooks.com) for many of the same reasons as you. My press is dealing with the same issues you describe (it’s kind of a relief not to feel so alone!).
I’ve added you to my google reader subscriptions and I’ve linked to you from my blog.
Happy blogging!
